Benefits of Coffee

Hello my friends!!

Today, I want to talk all about coffee! As a dietitian nutritionist, I often get the question whether I drink tea or coffee in the morning. My answer is coffee and it usually comes with a surprised look! I have always loved my morning cup of coffee and research suggests that it is A-OK (with a few caveats, of course). Included in this post is the benefits of coffee, a recipe for a DELICIOUS energizing morning smoothie AND a new local (Tampa) coffee delivery service – Tampa Coffee Club! Oh what fun!!

Coffee LOVE

Benefits of Coffee:

  1. High in antioxidants: Actually, according to research, it is the highest source of antioxidants in the American diet!  Interesting….
  2. May prevent incidence of Type II Diabetes: this may also be linked to it’s antioxidant properties which protect against insulin resistance (a precursor) to diabetes.
  3. Energy boosting properties: Okay, this one might sound obvious, but drinking coffee pre or post exercise (consistently), can be an extremely healthful & helpful way to help with overall energy!
  4. Anti-aging properties: Not only for the skin but coffee may also help with the brain and preventing Alzheimer’s disease.
  5. Coffee isn’t always dehydrating: That is, if you’re consistent. Research suggests that if you drink coffee at the same times, say, 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the afternoon that after 5 days your body normalizes and it gets used to this. But if you randomly drink 3 cups in the morning and occasionally have an afternoon cup, then the dehydrating properties of coffee are present. Consistency is key!

What you put in your coffee, how much and how often you drink is key! IF your 3 morning cups of coffee are a vehicle for high fat/high sugar creamer or a blended, icy, sugary Starbucks drink, I would say cut back. But enjoying 1-2 cups of delicious coffee with 1-2 tablespoons of organic milk, half and half or non dairy milk (almond, hemp, rice, coconut) is a great way to start out your day and to reap the above benefits of our friend, Mr. Coffee!
